Fritz Lawn & Landscaping Aeration & Overseeding

Aeration

Aeration can be done in early Spring or early Fall. Aerating punches 2-3 inch deep holes through the thatch in the soil of your lawn, allowing in air and moisture, which break down the thatch and nourishes the grass roots. A moist/wet lawn is beneficial for aeration as it makes it easier to punch holes into the soil whereas, dry conditions make it harder to core into the ground. We recommend that you water before you aerate.

At Fritz Lawn & Landscaping we start the aeration process by checking for irrigation systems (sprinkler heads, valves, etc…) and invisible fences. The aeration equipment we use for the small & medium-sized jobs are gas powered core aerators. For the bigger jobs we use a tractor with a pull behind core aerator that works better for wider open areas.

Overseeding

Overseeding requires twice as much seed as it takes to start a new lawn because existing grass will prevent some of the seeding from reaching the ground and seed to soil contact is critical for a healthy and full lawn. For Fritz Lawn & Landscaping’s overseeding program we use a spreader to the appropriate settings to spread the seed across the lawn. After complete coverage of the lawn we will gently rake the lawn to get the seed to soil contact necessary.

After overseeding is complete we apply a starter fertilizer to provide the new seed with nutrients and to establish the existing grass from the aggressive treatment.

Note: Aeration will not be done before overseeding. If aeration is completed before the overseeding, then seed will fall into the holes, this will be a waste of grass seed.
